Built on the Traditions of North Idaho Physical Therapy | BioPerformance Institute
North Idaho Physical Therapy
Since 1968
What began as one physical therapy practice in Coeur d’Alene has grown into a connected network of physical therapy, rehabilitation, nutrition, recovery, and human-performance services across North Idaho and Liberty Lake, Washington.
Through every stage of that growth, our purpose has remained centered on people: helping patients recover, move confidently, pursue better health, and live their best lives.
Our Story Began in Coeur d’Alene
North Idaho Physical Therapy began in 1968 when Lee Shellman, PT, opened a physical therapy practice in Coeur d’Alene. As the first physical therapist serving North Idaho, Lee helped establish greater local access to rehabilitation and movement-focused care.
What started as a single clinic grew as additional clinicians, leaders, and communities joined the organization. New locations allowed North Idaho Physical Therapy to serve more patients without losing the personal relationships and small-town care that shaped the original practice.
Today, that history continues through BioPerformance Institute. BPi builds on North Idaho Physical Therapy's foundation by connecting rehabilitation with nutrition, recovery, wellness, and performance-focused services.
Our growth has never been about adding locations or services just to get bigger. It has been about creating better access to knowledgeable clinicians, individualized treatment, and services that support people throughout different stages of health and movement.
A person may first come to BPi while recovering from an injury or surgery. Later, they may return to improve strength, address nutrition, support athletic performance, or explore additional recovery options.
By bringing these services together, we can help patients move beyond short-term symptom management and work toward better long-term function, health, and performance.
Built On People
“Our growth in size and services will never come at the cost of the small-town caring that defines us.”
Physical therapy remains at the foundation of who we are. It is where our history began and continues to be the primary way we serve patients throughout North Idaho.
BioPerformance Institute expands upon that foundation by recognizing that movement, recovery, nutrition, activity, and overall health are closely connected. Our goal is to give people access to appropriate services at different points in their health and performance journey.
From Physical Therapy to Human Performance
-
Individualized care for people recovering from injuries, preparing for or recovering from surgery, managing pain, addressing mobility limitations, or returning to work, recreation, and athletic activity.
-
Personalized nutrition guidance from registered dietitians for people managing health conditions, improving athletic performance, supporting recovery, or working toward sustainable health goals.
-
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy provides a controlled environment in which patients breathe concentrated oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure. Eligibility, treatment recommendations, risks, and expected outcomes should be discussed with a qualified provider.
-
BPI also provides specialty services such as aquatic physical therapy, vestibular rehabilitation, oncology physical therapy, occupational therapy, functional training, massage, dry needling, and recovery-focused therapies at select locations.
Our patients and clients come to North Idaho Physical Therapy | BPi with different needs, experiences, and goals. Care begins by understanding the individual rather than applying the same approach to everyone.

North Idaho Physical Therapy’s Approach To Care
Begin with the Individual
Every person arrives with a different history, lifestyle, set of responsibilities, and desired outcome. Care should reflect those differences.
Understand the Whole Picture
We evaluate more than the immediate complaint. When appropriate, clinicians consider movement, strength, mobility, activity demands, recovery, nutrition, and other factors that may affect progress.
Build a Practical Plan
Recommendations should be realistic, understandable, and connected to what the patient wants or needs to accomplish.
Measure Progress
Evaluations, treatment plans, and performance assessments help establish meaningful goals and track changes over time.
Support Long-Term Health
The goal is not only to help someone through the present concern. We also want to provide education, tools, and appropriate services that can support long-term movement and health.
